Importance of Sleep and Rest

A common misconception is that you’re growing while your pumping in the gym when really you grow when you sleep. When you’re in the gym training you’re actually tearing the muscle which is where that much sought after “pump” feeling comes in and therefore when you are sleeping your body takes that time to grow and repair.

If you don’t believe me let’s talk statistics. The average american sleeps about 6.8 hours and that number is slowly decreasing as the years go on. The recommended amount of sleep is between seven and nine hours. Now I know a lot of you are probably thinking “yeah right no one actually has time to get nine hours of sleep” and I agree 24 hours is not enough for one day but let’s put your health and fitness goals into perspective and see if your mind changes.

Now research shows REM sleep is when your bestfriend HGH (Human Growth Hormone) is released. In men, 60% to 70% of daily human growth hormone secretion occurs during early sleep which is typically when the deepest sleep cycles occur. And poor quality sleep can negatively impact human growth hormone levels.

Of course even after all the science and convincing sometimes life throws more or less at us and it is out of our hands most the time but make it a priority to get some good quality sleep. What I do is on the weekend or your typically less busy days get to bed a little earlier have some quiet me time and slip into that REM sleep.
